Essaouira, with its thick fortified ramparts, lime-washed houses, and bright blue-painted doors and windows, resembles no other town in the kingdom. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001 and formerly known as Mogador, it. Is a haven of peace and tranquility. It was built with the sole purpose of maritime trade, in the 18th century. Its orthogonal outline is owed to the French architect Theodore Cornut, a pupil of Vauban. Indeed, it drew its name from there, as Arab Essaouira means “the beautifully designed”.

The sultan at the time, Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah, then populated it with European consuls, foreign negotiators, the richest people in the kingdom, and large numbers of Jews with the aim of making the new town prosperous. Essaouira (Formerly Mogador) very quickly became the port for Timbuktu, where products manufactured in Europe were traded against gold, salt, sugar, and… ostrich feathers. However, its history goes back to the Phoenicians. They stopped off on the island of Mogador when they were traveling towards the equator. Juba 2, king of Mauritania, later set up a purple factory there, a color that was highly sought after by the Romans. The site was then occupied by the Portuguese and the Saadi sultans.

For many years it was the only Moroccan port open to outside trade. The decline began with the French protectorate and the development of other ports in Casablanca, Tangier, and Agadir.
Handicapped by the lack of depth of its waters which were unable to take large modern ships,
The city has nevertheless undergone a spectacular renaissance.

Over the last fifteen years, in the main as a result of not only tourism but also its cultural vocation. Every year since1996, at the end of June it hosts the Gnaoua World Music Festival. The philosophy behind the festival is to invite the best international artists of the moment to share a platform with the mystical Gnaoua maters. The magic gets to work and produces intense moment s of musical improvisation.

Itinerary

Enjoy a day trip to Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, and discover the charming sights of the city, including its ocher-colored walls, the beautiful Moulay El Hassan square, and the souks, as well as the narrow streets of the city’s old Medina. Join one of our scheduled shared tours and explore the best of Morocco. Our shared tours are small-group tours, usually, around 16 people at most, perfect if you don’t want to invest in a private tour but are looking for a quality service.

The coastal city Essaouira or the city of the wind, offers you many possibilities of discovery and meets all your cultural, artistic and sporting desires. Departing from Agadir, enjoy an unforgettable two and a half hour journey through the cultures of Argans and the breathtaking arid landscapes. You will come across families of goats perched on argan trees.

Upon arrival, you will have the opportunity to visit a cooperative of women who produce Argan oil. Then set off to explore the fishing port of Essaouira. Cross the previous medina with its Souks and its traditional market. You will discover art galleries and authentic carpentry workshops, thuja marquetry and basketry art.

Explore, similarly, the ramparts and the gates of Essaouira, as well as its Borj and military buildings including La sqala de la kasbah and la sqala du port: the two main fortifications of the city. For fans of windsurfing or Kit surfing, the climatic particularity of Essaouira and its geographical position have made it a strong point to practice these two sports. Be sure to admire a Souiri tajine or a superb fish dish (Essaouira specialty) in a restaurant by the sea, before returning to Agadir
